Quality practitioners have a challenging role. On the one hand, we must be the voice of the customer within our organizations, implementing standards and making tough decisions that people within our organizations dislike – we shut down lines to fix a problem; scrap defective material; and in general, sometimes make life difficult for our co-workers. On the other hand, we must also represent the business to the customer. Add to this being able to deal with a multigenerational workforce, which has its own unique set of challenges.
This talk describes successful methods of focusing on the internal relationships and techniques needed for sustainable quality improvement such as internal co-ownership, building trust on the shop floor, and “selling” our co-workers on the usefulness of Quality activities in a practical way. In other words – how do you make Quality activities appear to be “value-added” to everyone within your organization?
About the presenter: Norval Johnston is a Quality Engineer at Cadence, Inc. in Staunton, VA. He has a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Virginia Tech and an MBA degree from James Madison University. Norval has 25 years of experience in Quality. He is an ASQ Senior member and holds 6 ASQ certifications (CQE, CQA, CSSGB, CQT, CMI, and CQIA).
